Heneral Luna 3 nominations at 10th Asian Film Awards

The historical biopic “Heneral Luna” may have failed to get the Oscars’ nod, but it gets three nominations at the 10th Asian Film Awards (AFA).

John Arcilla, who plays the title role of the the feisty general, is nominated as Best Actor. He will be competing against a formidable list of Asian actors including Donnie Yen of Hong Kong for the film Ip Man 3; Nagase Masatoshi of Japan for An; Feng Xiaogang of Mainland China for Mr. Six; and Lee Byung-Hun of South Korea for the film Inside Men.

If John wins the Best Actor award, he will join the elite group of Filipino performers who bagged major awards for acting in previous Asian Film Awards.

Gina Pareño is the first Filipino who won an acting award at the AFA, when she bagged the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Serbis in 2009. She was followed by Shamaine Buencamino who won as Best Supporting Actress in 2012 for the film Niño. In 2013, Eddie Garcia won as Best Actor for Bwakaw and Nora Aunor won as Best Actress for Thy Womb.

Aside from the Best Actor nomination, Heneral Luna is also nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

The 10th Asian Film Awards announced the 77 nominees vying for the 15 awards on February 3. A total of 36 films representing nine countries are competing.

Awarding ceremonies for the 10th AFA will be held at The Venetian Macao on March 17, 2016.
