The Cinema One Originals 2018 Awards Night made a historic first in Philippine cinema when transgender woman Iyah Mina bagged the Best Actress award for her debut movie “Mamu; and A Mother Too“.

Iyah Mina is now the first transgender woman to win Best Actress in Philippine Cinema.

In her emotional speech, Iyah Mina dedicated her award to the transgender and LGBTQ community. She said they should celebrate equality.

Towards the end of her speech, Iyah Mina said, “Eto na… babae ako! True!” (This is it…I’m a woman! True!)

Iyah Mina plays the role of an aging transgender who unexpectedly becomes responsible for her orphaned niece, who is a young transgender.

As she takes her niece under her care, Iyah encounters problems in balancing her work, and her roles as a mother to her niece and a partner to her young boyfriend.

Directed by Rod Singh, “Mamu; and A Mother Too” also won for Best Supporting Actor (Arron Villaflor) and Audience Choice Award at the Cinema One Originals 2018.

EJ Jallorina, Markus Patterson, and Jovani Manansala are also part of the cast.
