The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2018 entry, “Aurora” has earned PHP 107 million in 15 days. This was revealed by Viva Films on January 8, 2019, the production and distribution company behind the blockbuster movie.

“Aurora” is one of the top grossers of the MMFF 2018, which is now the highest grossing MMFF ever, registering PHP1.060 billion from December 25, 2018 to January 7, 2019. This surpassed the previous festival record of PHP1.050 billion set in 2015.

Although MMFF did not reveal the rankings and actual box office earnings of the 8 official entries, it is believed that the top 3 highest grossing movies are “Fantastica”, “Jack Em Popoy: The PulisCredibles” and “Aurora”.

Now that Viva Films has revealed the box office earnings of “Aurora”, it only confirms that the movie is a certified hit for the production company and for its co-producer, Aliud Entertainment.

The horror thriller “Aurora” movie is top billed by Filipino actress Anne Curtis (age 33). It also stars Mercedes Cabral, Marco Gumabao, Sue Prado, Allan Paule, Andrea del Rosario, Phoebe Villamor, Ricardo Cepeda, and Ruby Ruiz.

Directed by Yam Laranas, “Aurora” follows the story of Leana (Anne Curtis) who lives in an island with her younger sister named Rita (Phoebe Villamor).

Their lives change when a ship named Aurora crashes near the island, killing scores of people aboard the ship and destroying the livelihood of the island.

Rita’s ability to see dead people emerges, but every time she does, something disastrous happens. Her older sister Leana tries to protect her, before it becomes too late.

Critical Reception

Aside from its commercial success, “Aurora” is hailed by critics for the performance of its lead actors, its breathtaking cinematography, and superb sound effects.

The praise received by the movie “Aurora” is mirrored in the 5 awards which it won during the MMFF awarding ceremony. Aurora bagged the awards for Best Child Performer (Phoebe Villamor), Best Cinematographer, Best Sound Design, and Best Visual Effects. It was also judged to be 2nd best picture of the Metro Manila Film Festival 2018.

Many of those who saw “Aurora” said the movie deserves to be seen worldwide.

“Aurora” started showing in selected cinemas in the Middle East on January 3, 2019 and will also be showing in selected theaters in the US on January 18, 2019.
