M. Night Shyamalan’s latest sci-fi thriller “Glass” earned an estimated $40.58 million in its opening weekend.

Its box office take is a bit lower than what Universal expected, and will most likely fall a bit short of the projected $50 million domestic earnings for the four-day Martin Luther King weekend.

Despite that, “Glass”, which stars James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sarah Paulson, was the #1 film during the period. It was followed by “The Upside” and on third place is the anime “Dragon Ball Super: Broly”.

Outside of US and Canada, “Glass” earned $48.5 million, bringing the total gross to $89 million worldwide.

In comparison with the other installments in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable series, the earnings of “Glass”, is just ahead of “Split”, which earned $40 million over the same weekend in 2017.

“Split” ended with $138.2 million domestic gross during its run, and $278.4 million worldwide.

Whether “Glass” will mimic the earnings of “Split” till the end will largely depend on how well the audience will receive it.

So far, “Glass” is trailing behind in terms of Cinemascore from opening audiences, getting a “B”, compared to “Split”‘s score of “B+”.

On review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, “Split” is way ahead with 76% average rating compared to 36% average rating for “Glass”.

Even with the bad reviews, M. Night Shyamalan is already laughing all the way to the bank. He has already recouped his $20 million investment for “Glass” in its first 3 days of showing alone. The rest of the earnings that will come, are just icing on the cake.
