Fox’s big-budgeted action adventure movie ‘Alita: Battle Angel‘ surpassed expectations and has earned $27.8 million in 3 days in the US and Canada, leading the pack of movies showing on the President’s Day Weekend.

The cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Gunnm aka ‘Battle Angel Alita’ is estimated to bring in around $36.5 million gross on its 4th day of showing (February 17, 2019), surpassing earlier estimates of $30 million domestic gross for the weekend.

In foreign territories, Alita has earned $94.3 million as of February 17, 2019, for a total of over $130 million worldwide take in 4 days.

Though the box office figures may seem impressive this early, the global take of Alita is still way below its hefty production budget of $170 million.

Fox says the breakeven point is between $350 to $400 million, according to a Deadline article. But industry experts say the figure is considerably higher.

Still, Alita has a long way to go and just might rake in profits once it debuts in China and Japan by February 22.

‘Avatar’ creator James Cameron, who co-wrote Alita with Laeta Kalogridis and also produced it with Jon Landau, is reportedly well-loved in China.

In its latest ads, Fox is also using the Cameron card, promoting the movie as coming from the maker of ‘Avatar’.

The question now is, will ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ ever come close to achieving the box office success of James Cameron’s top grossing movie, ‘Avatar’?

Critics don’t seem to be pleased with ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ at this point, with the movie getting only a 60% grade from 231 reviews on review aggregation-website Rotten Tomatoes.

However, the audience seem to be pleased with the movie, with 93% liking it. Moviegoers have also given it a A- CinemaScore.

With this divergence in opinion, Fox could hope that Alita: Battle Angel could follow the way of their blocbuster movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” which didn’t sit well with the critics too, but went on to earn over $854 million worldwide.

‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Rosa Salazar as the cyborg Alita. Joining her in the cast are Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson.
