The 12-year-old Filipino singer Rock Opong, performed “I Believe” on Asia’s Got Talent 2019 semifinals rounds.

Rock Opong turned the 1953 inspirational ballad into a pop rock song. “I Believe” was written and composed by Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl and Al Stillman for Jane Froman, and has become a popular and religious standard song.

Though Rock gave an amazing performance and was well-applauded by the audience, David Foster wasn’t pleased with his song choice.

Comments of the judges on Rock Opong’s performance:

David Foster

I want you to listen to me very carefully, OK? I don’t like that song choice. I didn’t think it was the right choice for you tonight. I think you could have picked a better song that more suited your age. But listen to me carefully, if you do everything, cue your whole life towards music and devote your entire life to it, I honestly believe, and I’ve been sitting in this chair for a long time, that you could be a star.

Jay Park

I feel like you kind of got off to like a shaky start. But then you definitely got in the zone and put on a great performance. And I think you’re a great guitar player and a very talented young man.

I believe that you are a super talented young man as well. I don’t know, there’s something about your voice that when I close my eyes, I don’t think it’s a 12-year-old who’s actually singing. It’s crazy.

Asked by host Alan Wong if he thinks he made his father proud on his performance, Rock replied in the affirmative. He said his father mentored him since he was five years old and helped him to reach his dream and to make his country proud.

Alan said, “I think you did that, Rock. I think you did that.”
