Laine Hardy (age 18) looked dashing in a dark suit as he sang the classic “Come Together” by The Beatles, pleasing the crowd and the judges of American Idol 2019 during the Top 40 Showcase round at the Disney Aulani resort in Hawaii.
Even before he sang the first note, Laine asked the audience, “Ya’ll ready to party with the Hardy?”
With the confidence and swag of a seasoned performer, Laine Hardy gained the admiration of Katy Perry who said, “Am I allowed to have a crush on a contestant?”
When it was time for the judges to make their decisions known, Laine Hardy was with Tyler Mitchell, another Top 40 contestant who performed before Hardy took to the stage.
Tyler and Hardy were vying for the last spot in the Top 20.
Laine Hardy said before facing the judges, “I’m nervous to find out because this is the exact same spot I was in last year. It definitely feels familiar.”
Hardy was a contestant on American Idol Season 16 (2018) but he failed to make it to the Top 24.
It was Luke Bryan who handed down the decision. He said:
Tyler, you’ve had some magic moments, you’ve had some ups and downs. You’ve had some moments where you thought you were going home.
And Laine, your journey has been very similar. You’ve shined, you’ve blown your voice out. You’ve battled. You had a black suit on. Now you got a shirt with white doves on.
Sadly we have two of you guys onstage and we have one slot left. So now, I’ll deliver the news.
Tyler, this is the end of the road buddy. You’re not in our Top 20.
Laine, great job, you’re in the Top 20.
Katy told Laine, “Hey, I’m ready to party with the Hardy. We were believin’ in you before you done believe in yourself.”
