Denize Castillo (age 20) from Naic, Cavite sang a jaw-dropping version of “Himala” [Miracle] by Rivermaya during the auditions of Idol Philippines 2019.
Castillo said that she hadn’t seen her mother since she left for California when Denize was just 2 years old. This story made the judges empathize with her, especially Judge Vice Ganda who said he had a similar story.
When she sang her cover of “Himala”, the judges were already visibly impressed.
Moira Dela Torre said she loved Denize Castillo’s voice and said she was inspiring while James Reid said Denize is definitely a singer, making him want to sing.
Vice Ganda said she liked Denize the moment she hummed but said Denize lost her “fire” in the middle of the song. He said he wants her to focus so she can bring back her mother, as he did with his own mother. She added that Denize should let that serve as her inspiration.
He asked Denize to sing the chorus of the song again. “An idol shows the heart and soul. Do it and you can be Idol Philippines, ” Vice Ganda said.
Denize Castillo said that she wants to be a singer so much and revealed she had Bell’s Palsy but was cured in just 2 weeks. She thought she would not be able to sing anymore at that time.
Regine said that Denize should practice more in hitting the high notes, but voted Yes for her. The rest of the judges gave Denize Castillo their Yes votes, and they gave her a Golden Ticket to Idol City, where the next level of Idol Philippines 2019 will be held.
