Star Trek: Picard is an American web TV series created for CBS All Access by executive producer Alex Kurtzman. It will be the eighth series in the Star Trek franchise and centers on the life of character Jean-Luc Picard. Set at the end of the 24th century, 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), the storyline is affected by the destruction of the planet Romulus referenced in the film Star Trek (2009), as well as the death of Data in Nemesis.
Patrick Stewart, who stars as Jean-Luc Picard, also executive produces the series. He will be reprising his iconic role from Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as other Star Trek media.
Sir Patrick Stewart OBE (age 79) is an English actor whose work has included roles on stage, TV, and film in a career spanning six decades. He has been nominated for Olivier, Golden Globe, Emmy, Screen Actors Guild, and Saturn Awards. He began his career with a long run with the Royal Shakespeare Company and received the 1979 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Antony and Cleopatra in the West End. Stewart’s first major screen roles were in BBC-broadcast television productions during the mid-late 1970s, including Hedda, and the I, Claudius miniseries.
Joining Stewart in the cast are Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, and Isa Briones. Several actors from previous Star Trek series will also reprise their roles, including Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, Marina Sirtis, and Jonathan Frakes. Filming began in California in April 2019, with the series’ official title announced a month later.
The series was first rumored in June 2018 when Alex Kurtzman began his expansion, and was officially announced that August after months of negotiations with Stewart, who had previously said he would not return to the franchise after Nemesis. When CBS first approached him about making more Star Trek series, Kurtzman believed that Picard was the greatest Star Trek captain and included a series featuring the character on his wish list. Despite Stewart’s statements that he was done with the franchise, Kurtzman and Goldsman contacted Stewart in late 2017.
Kurtzman revealed that the series would find the character “radically altered” by the destruction of Romulus several years after the events of Nemesis, as depicted in the film Star Trek (2009). He said the series will feature a more psychological show, a character study about Picard in his retirement years.
Star Trek: Picard is scheduled to premiere on January 23, 2020, and its first season will consist of ten episodes. Ahead of the premiere, CBS All Access renewed Star Trek: Picard for a 10-episode second season. Following the premiere, new episodes of Star Trek: Picard’s first season will be available weekly on Thursdays, exclusively for CBS All Access subscribers in the U.S.
