Pain and Glory (Spanish: Dolor y gloria) is a 2019 Spanish drama film directed and written by Pedro Almodóvar.
It tells a series of re-encounters experienced by Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, his first adult love and the pain of the breakup, writing as the only therapy to forget, the early discovery of cinema.
Pain and Glory talks about creation and the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope.
Antonio Banderas won as Best Actor at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival for playing the role of Salvador Mallo.
The film holds an approval rating of 90% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, and a weighted average score of 81 out of 100 on Metacritic.
