The Walt Disney remake movie “The Lion King” (2019) earned USD 185 million on its opening weekend domestically (North America and Canada).
The Lion King 2019 is turning out to be a massive hit despite the initial negative reviews from critics. The box office take of The Lion King has also outperformed pre-release forecasts of USD 150 to USD 180 million.
On Friday, The Lion King earned an estimated USD 78.5 million domestically, the 10th highest opening day in industry history. In contrast with the critics, domestic and foreign audiences love the film, with opening day audiences giving it an “A” CinemaScore.
Earnings of The Lion King from foreign markets reached USD 269 million this weekend, with China, where it opened last weekend, accounting for USD 97.5 million. That brings the box office total to USD 531 million worldwide.
The Disney reboot directed by Jon Favreau now has the second best opening of 2019, trailing behind “Avengers: Endgame.” It surpassed the debuts of “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast” and toppled “Incredibles 2” from its number 9 position on the list of highest opening weekends domestically.
Analysts are now saying that The Lion King might end up as Walt Disney’s highest grossing non-MCU or non-Star Wars movie.
The Lion King features an impressive voice cast which includes Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Oliver, John Kani and James Earl Jones.
