Khalea Lynee (age 36) and Zoe Upkins (age 16) of Team Legend sang Monica and Brandy’s “The Boy is Mine” on The Voice Battles 2019 (Season 17).
Gwen Stefani said that Zoe’s stage presence was shocking for her age and that she commanded the stage. She said Khalea’s vocal performance was buttery and beautiful halfway through the song. But Gwen picked Zoe as the winner of the battle.
Kelly Clarkson said she loves both Khalea and Zoe and noted that they both have completely different styles. She said if either one of them is up for grabs, she’s going in.
Blake Shelton told Zoe that she is far ahead for her age. But he knows that experience, confidence and professionalism goes a long way in the competition, so he picked Khalea as the winner of the round.
John Legend said he’s upset that he paired Khalea and Zoe against each other. He said Zoe showed tremendous growth since the Blinds while Khalea is polished, and has great sense of rhythm and pocket. Though it was a tough decision, John picked Khalea because he thinks she is most versatile. He said she is one of the most gifted in the competition and has beautiful riffs and runs.
When host Carson Daly announced that Zoe was up for a steal or save, John pressed his button, and so did Gwen and Kelly.
John said he messed up by pairing Zoe and Khalea together. He said he loved the way Zoe got into character with the song. Kelly said she has been a fan of Zoe since the blinds and that she won The Voice with two minor girls. Gwen said Zoe doesn’t want to be with a coach who messes up. She said that Zoe has stage presence and personality and she thinks she can help her with that even more.
Asked to make her choice, Zoe still chose to be with her original coach, John Legend.
