Matthew McQueen (age 21) and Joana Martinez (age 15) sang a lively duet of “High Hopes” by American band Panic at the Disco on The Voice Battles 2019 (Season 17).
John Legend said he loved their energy and chemistry. He said he loved Matthew’s growl, raspiness, and edge in his voice. As to Joana, John said she was fantastic, has so much poise for a 15-year-old, and hit “beautifully executed high notes.” John picked Joana as the winner of the battle.
Gwen said Matthew did a good job, with some “shockingly good” moments. With Joana, Gwen said she is amazed at her style and confidence considering she’s only 15. Gwen said she’s leaning towards Joana because she wanted her on her team since her audition, but she also thinks Matthew is super interesting as an artist.
Kelly Clarkson thinks Joana is an amazing vocalist for her age but also said that she can’t take her eyes of Matthew because he is commanding. She said the song is one of the hardest to sing considering Brendon Urie (of Panic at the Disco) is one of best male vocalists right now. She said Matthew made the song his own and just from pure sound, she thinks Matthew was “captivating”.
Coach Blake Shelton said he agreed with Kelly that Matthew did those things that are captivating. As for Joana, he said everything about her is impressive and she might improve more come the live shows. Blake concluded that both were great and so he laughs at himself because it’s a tough decision to make. Eventually, he picked Joana as the winner of the battle.
Matthew didn’t get a Save since Blake had used it before. Among the remaining judges, only John had a Steal left, but he opted not to use it on Matthew.
