In the open world video game Free City, an amalgamation of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a non-player character, working as a bank teller. Thanks to code developed by programmers Milly (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery) inserted into Free City by the publisher Antoine (Taika Waititi), Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and takes steps to make himself the hero, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.
Ryan Reynolds plays the titular role. The cast also includes Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Taika Waititi, Camille Kostek. Additionally, various YouTube personalities will cameo: Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin will portray Q*Bert, while Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Imane “Pokimane” Anys, and Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott, and Daniel Robert “DanTDM” Middleton will appear as themselves. Late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek also makes a posthumous appearance in the film. Actors Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Tina Fey and John Krasinski have cameos in the movie as well.
Free Guy has been in development at 21st Century Fox prior to its acquisition by Disney, and is one of the first Fox films to continue production under the Disney label. Ryan Reynolds, who produced the film along with Shawn Levy, said “I haven’t been this fully immersed and engaged in something since Deadpool”. The film started principal photography in Boston in May 2019, including around the city’s Financial District. Filming also took place in Framingham, Massachusetts, in the former Framingham Bank building.
The first trailer for Free Guy was released online on December 7, 2019, shortly after Reynolds presented the teaser to the audience at CCXP. The trailer features a remixed version of Mariah Carey’s 1995 single Fantasy. The film is due to be released on July 3, 2020. On October 3, 2019, 20th Century Fox released a “Meet the Cast” promotional video, in which Reynolds and Waititi claim they are pleased to have the opportunity to work together for the first time, despite Comer and Keery pointing out that they worked together previously on the critically panned film Green Lantern.
The film was initially scheduled to be released July 3, 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then moved to December 11, 2020. In December 2020, the film was rescheduled to May 21, 2021. In March, Ryan Reynolds announced that the film would again move, this time to the August 13, 2021 date. Free Guy will have a 45-day exclusive theatrical release.
Ryan Reynolds is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, film producer, and screenwriter. He began his career starring in the Canadian teen soap opera Hillside and had minor roles before landing the role of Michael Bergen on the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl between 1998 and 2001. Reynolds then starred in a range of films, including comedies such as National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Waiting…, and The Proposal. He also performed in dramatic roles in Buried, Woman in Gold, and Life, and starred in action films such as Blade: Trinity, Green Lantern, and Safe House.
