It will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020. It is scheduled to be released on March 13, 2020, by Focus Features. In April 2019, it was announced Sidney Flanigan, Talia Ryder, Théodore Pellerin, Ryan Eggold and Sharon Van Etten had joined the cast of the film, with Eliza Hittman directing from a screenplay she wrote. Adele Romanski and Sara Murphy will produce the film under their Pastel Productions banner, while Rose Garnett, Tim Headington, Elika Portnoy and Alex Orlovsky will executive produce the film under their BBC Films and Tango Entertainment banners respectively. Focus Features will distribute.

Théodore Pellerin is a Canadian film and television actor from Quebec. He is most noted for his performance in the 2018 film Family First (Chien de garde), for which he won the Prix Iris for Revelation of the Year at the 2nd Prix Iris and the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor at the 7th Canadian Screen Awards. He is the son of dancer and choreographer Marie Chouinard and painter Denis Pellerin.

Ryan Eggold is an American actor. He is known for playing Ryan Matthews on the CW teen drama series 90210 and Tom Keen on the NBC crime drama series The Blacklist and its short-lived spin-off series The Blacklist: Redemption. Currently Ryan appears as hospital director Dr. Max Goodwin, a main character on the NBC drama series New Amsterdam, which began in September 2018.

Sharon Van Etten is an American singer-songwriter and actress from New Jersey. Van Etten was born in Belleville, New Jersey and lived in Nutley, NJ before moving to Clinton as a pre-teen, where she attended North Hunterdon High School at which she participated in the chorus and performed in stage musicals. Later, she moved to Tennessee to attend Middle Tennessee State University and studied recording, but dropped out of college after a year.

Van Etten ended up working at the Red Rose, a coffee and record shop and music venue in Murfreesboro, for about five years. In 2004, she moved back to New Jersey, where she worked at Perryville Wine and Spirits. Van Etten moved to New York City in 2005.
