The newly formed boyband Unwritten Rule sang a cover of “Dance Monkey” by Australian singer Tones and I during the live finale of The X Factor: The Band held on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham.
Unwritten Rule finished the special edition of the British reality talent competition The X Factor in second place. The girlband Real Like You won The X Factor: The Band garnering 55.1% of the votes.
Unwritten Rule is composed of members Harrison Cole (age 19), Boaz Dopemu (age 21), Caius Duncombe (age 19), Fred Roberts (age 17), Jed Thomas (age 16), and Reece Wiltshire-Fessey (age 19).
Unwritten Rule performed the following songs during the finale: “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I, “Love Me like You Do” by Ellie Goulding and “Before You Go” by Lewis Capaldi.
The X Factor: The Band is a replacement for a planned All Stars spin-off series, which was originally supposed to air following The X Factor: Celebrity in late-2019.
The format featured Simon Cowell and entertainer Nicole Scherzinger compete to find the best new boyband and girlband, with contestants auditioning in front of industry experts and guest judges including Leona Lewis, Naughty Boy, and Ella Eyre.
The X Factor: The Band aired a total of four episodes starting December 9, 11 and 13, with a live finale at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham on December 15, 2019.
The series was first reported in early 2019 as being The X Factor: All Stars, as the regular series is being put on hiatus due to declining ratings. But in November 2019, it was announced that the proposed All Stars series had been axed in favour of The X Factor: The Band.
The auditions for the competition took place at Syco Music headquarters in London, in front of the judges and industry experts.
Dermot O’Leary returned as host while Simon Cowell served as a judge alongside Nicole Scherzinger, who was previously a judge on the main version of The X Factor and the recently aired celebrity version. British singer and songwriter Leona Lewis joined the judging panel during the Audience Auditions round of the competition.
