After the Democratic National Committee’s top strategist Gary (Steve Carell) sees a video of a retired Marine Colonel (Chris Cooper) standing up for the rights of his town’s undocumented workers, Gary believes he has found the key to winning back the Heartland. He works the campaign for the retired veteran’s bid for Mayor of a small right-wing Wisconsin town. However, the Republican National Committee counters him by sending in his brilliant nemesis Faith (Rose Byrne) and a local race quickly becomes a fight for the soul of America.

It was announced in October 2018 that Jon Stewart was planning his next directorial effort, with Steve Carell in talks to star in the film. In March 2019, Rose Byrne entered negotiations to join the film and that same month, Chris Cooper joined the cast of the film, with Focus Features acquiring distribution rights. The rest of the cast joined the film from April to June 2019. Production reportedly started in the latter part of April 2019.

American actor, comedian, producer, writer and director Steve Carell (age 57) plays the role of political strategist Gary Zimmer. He is well known for his portrayal of boss Michael Scott on the NBC sitcom The Office (2005–2013), on which he also worked as an occasional producer, writer, and director.

Steve Carell was a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart from 1999 to 2005. He became popular in mostly comedy films including Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) and its 2013 sequel, The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Evan Almighty (2007), Get Smart (2008), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and The Way, Way Back (both 2013). He has also voice acted in Over the Hedge (2006), Horton Hears a Who! (2008) and the Despicable Me franchise (2010–present). In 2016, Carell co-created the TBS comedy series Angie Tribeca with his wife, Nancy Carell.

Carell was nominated as “America’s funniest man” by Life magazine, and received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – TV Series Musical or Comedy for his work on the first season of The Office. In the drama film Foxcatcher (2014), he played the role of wrestling coach and convicted murderer John Eleuthère du Pont and got nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also received acclaim for his roles in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), The Big Short (2015), and Battle of the Sexes (2017), the latter two earning him his eighth and ninth Golden Globe Award nominations, respectively. In 2018, he starred in the Dick Cheney biopic Vice and in the drama Beautiful Boy.

Also starring in Irresistible is Australian actress Rose Byrne (age 40). She made her screen debut in the film Dallas Doll (1994), and got her first leading film role in The Goddess of 1967 (2000), which brought her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. She then made the transition to Hollywood in the small role of Dormé in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), followed by larger parts in Troy (2004), 28 Weeks Later (2007), and Knowing (2009).

Byrne also appeared as Ellen Parsons in all 59 episodes of the criminal thriller series Damages (2007–2010), which earned her two Golden Globe Awards nominations and two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Get Him to the Greek (2010) and Bridesmaids (2011) established her as a comedic actress, in addition to the dramas and thrillers she continues to appear in.
