A first look at Hulu’s new drama series based on Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel. Normal People is an exquisite, modern love story about how one person can unexpectedly change another person’s life and about how complicated intimacy can be. It follows Marianne and Connell over several years, as they embark on an on-again/off-again romance that starts at school and continues through college, both testing their relationship as they explore different versions of themselves. Coming Spring 2020.
Normal People will be available on Hulu in the United States and on BBC Three in the United Kingdom.

Normal People is an upcoming Hulu and BBC Three television series based on the eponymous novel by Sally Rooney starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal. The series follows Marianne and Connell through their secondary school and university years.
In May 2019, it was announced BBC Three and Hulu ordered a 12 episodes based on the novel that would premiere 2020 starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal as Marianne and Connell respectively. Sarah Greene and Aislín McGuckin were also announced as part of the cast. Sally Rooney herself would help with the adaptation alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald are directing and Irish company Element Pictures are producing the series.
Principal photography began on location in Sligo and Dublin in May 2019. Real life students from Trinity College Dublin while filming at the university will feature in the series. Filming also took place in Italy.
Paul Mescal is an Irish actor best known for his theatre work. He will star as Connell in upcoming Hulu and BBC Three series Normal People.
Mescal is from Maynooth, County Kildare. He was an under 21 footballer for Leinster and was a member of Maynooth GAA. His skills as a defender were praised by Gaelic footballer Brian Lacey. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting from The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin in 2017.
As he was graduating from The Lir, Mescal was offered roles in two high-profile theatre productions: Angela’s Ashes and The Great Gatsby. Due to scheduling, he took on The Great Gatsby, starring as the lead at the Gate Theatre. He also played the Prince in a contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes at the Gate that year.
In 2018, Mescal landed the role of Lieutenant Langon in The Plough and the Stars at the Lyric Theatre and Gaiety Theatre in London. He played Bryan in the world premiere of Louise O’Neill’s Asking for It. He then acted in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man with the Rough Magic Theatre company for the 2018 Dublin Theatre Festival and Kilkenny Arts Festival.
In May 2019, it was announced Mescal would star in the main role of as Connell alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in upcoming Hulu and BBC Three series Normal People, an adaptation of the novel by Sally Rooney. He is also set to play Matt in comedy series Bump.
