The Resident is an American medical drama TV series aired by Fox Broadcasting Company that premiered on January 21, 2018, as a lead-out to the Vikings-Eagles NFC Championship, and as a mid-season replacement entry in the 2017–18 television season. The fictional series focuses on the lives and duties of staff members at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital, while delving into the bureaucratic practices of the hospital industry.
The show was purchased by FOX from Showtime in 2017. It was created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi. On May 10, 2017, Fox ordered a full 14-episode season and renewed the series for a second season on May 7, 2018 . The second season premiered on September 24, 2018. In March 2019, Fox renewed the series for a third season which premiered on September 24, 2019.
During the 2017–2018 United States TV season, the series ranked #41 and averaged 7.02 million viewers.
In the United States, new episodes are broadcast by FOX. Internationally, the series is shown on Seven Network in Australia, City (season 1) and CTV (season 2–present) in Canada, and on Universal TV in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Hulu currently owns the SVOD rights to the series, and individual episodes, or the season as a whole, are available for purchase on Amazon and iTunes. The first season DVD set was made available for pre-order in June 2018 through Amazon and was released on October 2, 2018.
American actor Matthew Czuchry (age 42) plays the role of Conrad Hawkins, a senior resident internist at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital and later chief resident and the team doctor for Georgia Revolution FC. Czuchry is also known for his roles as Logan Huntzberger on The WB television series Gilmore Girls (2005–07) and Cary Agos on the CBS television drama The Good Wife (2009–16).
Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, Czuchry grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee. His father, Andrew Czuchry, is a professor at East Tennessee State University, and his mother, Sandra, is a homemaker. He is of Ukrainian descent on his father’s side.
Czuchry graduated from Science Hill High School in 1995 where he was Tennessee state prep tennis singles champion that year and graduated with honors in 1999 from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science. He won the Mr College of Charleston pageant in 1998. Czuchry attended college on a tennis scholarship, captained the men’s tennis team, and was an NCAA ranked player in the Southern Conference.
Canadian actress Emily VanCamp (age 33) plays the female lead role of nurse practitioner Nic Nevin in The Resident series. VanCamp is known for her roles on the TV series Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, and Revenge. She is also known as Sharon Carter / Agent 13 in the MCU films Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016) and the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2020).
