Arthur Gunn (age 21) from Wichita, Kansas sang two songs during his audition on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). First he sang a cover of “Girl from the North Country” by Bob Dylan. But he was asked by judge Lionel Richie to sing another one. Gunn then sang a version of “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Both his renditions wowed the judges, prompting Luke Bryan to say,”You wanna open for me in Detroit in 2 weeks?”

With his soulful voice and polished guitar-playing, Arthur Gunn got a well-deserved ticket to Hollywood for the next level of the competition.

Arthur Gunn said in a pre-taped interview that he was born in Nepal, Kathmandu, and that he loved music since he was a kid. He got his first guitar from his mother. Gunn moved to America after high school, because “it’s the land of great opportunity”. Moving to Wichita, Kansas brought him closer to bluegrass and country music. Asked what he feels about auditioning for American Idol, Gunn said he is 90% excited and 10% nervous. He said, it’s his chance to make his American dream come true.

When Gunn performed “Girl from the North Country” by Bob Dylan, the judges were bowled over. Lionel Richie asked for another song and Katy Perry asked Gunn to keep his eyes open while performing.

Gunn performed “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” this time, and the judges were more impressed, with Katy Perry saying he is indeed “dibesh” (Arthur Gunn’s real name).

Katy Perry said, “Do you notice the connection when you kept your eyes open, and the joy and the happiness? Coz, you have such a great storyteller voice and I’m really excited for you.” Katy later remarked, “You’re a rockstar!”

Luke Bryan said, “We know what you’re doing. You are feeling this music but it makes your eyes kind of roll back and flutter a little bit and we’re just trying to set you up for global overtaking. What a unique artist you are.”

Lionel Richie walked up to Arthur and said, “You have no idea what this journey is going to be for you.” Arthur Gunn said he’s excited for it.

Lionel continued by saying, “You are the story that we need to tell and welcome to the world, my friend.”

American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television. Ryan Seacrest will continue his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones will return as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
