Sarah Isen (age 20) from Berkeley, California sang an amazing cover of “If I Were A Boy” by Beyonce during the Auditions round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“If I Were a Boy” is a song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad and recorded by American singer Beyoncé for her third studio album I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008). The song was initially recorded by Jean, whose record company rejected it. Beyonce’s version and single placed in the top ten on 25 different singles charts. It peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned multi-platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, and the US.
Sarah Isen, who comes from a family of 26 half-siblings, got the much-coveted Golden Ticket to Hollywood after American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie gave their “Yes” votes to her performance.
Sasha Isen shared her very interesting life story with the judges during the audition. She said she was raised by two moms and when she was about 14, she connected with her biological father, who is a sperm donor. Since then, she has found 25 other half-siblings, 10 of whom accompanied her at the audition. Her biological father was also present at her audition.
She said her biological father decided to be a donor primarily to help LGBT families. Sarah also said she spends holidays with her half-siblings and that they’re really like her best friends. Her story was so interesting that at one point, Lionel said, “Don’t sing, just tell me some more stories.”
After her performance, Luke Bryan told Sasha, “It totally blew me away. Was it a flawless performance? It wasn’t. When you went into the chorus, I think you were nervous on that first line. And your second half of the chorus, you totally corrected your nerves, is that true? (Sasha answered “yes”.)
Lionel Richie said, “You have a low end that will compel me to sit here and listen to every word you are ever gonna sing. You can open up a lot more. And I’m just gonna call that your heart beating a little faster than you would like it to be, but it’s ok. I really like what you’re doing.”
Katy Perry said, “I was really happy that you came back down after the chorus and ended with that subtlety, with that beautiful alto voice that you have. I would like for you to use dynamics even more. Just think about how you can do this push-pull thing like you can make it big and then bring us back in, make it big. Take us on that roller coaster with your voice.”
