The film is based on real-life events that happened at writer and co-producer Mike Makowsky’s high school during the time he was a student there.
Bad Education had its world premiere on September 9, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it received positive reviews. Critics praised Makowsky’s screenplay and the performances of Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney. Shortly after TIFF, HBO Films acquired distribution rights to the film for $17.5 million.
In March 2018, it was announced Hugh Jackman had joined the cast of the film, with Cory Finley directing from a screenplay written by Mike Makowsky. Makowsky, Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Julia Lebedev, Edward Vaisman and Oren Moverman serve as producers on the film, under their Automatik and Sight Unseen banners, respectively. Allison Janney joined the cast of the film in June 2018 while Geraldine Viswanathan and Ray Romano joined the cast in the next month.
Principal photography for Bad Education began in October 2018. The film will be released on HBO on April 25, 2020.
