New Amsterdam is an American medical drama TV series created by David Schulner, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer. The series premiered on September 25, 2018 on NBC and stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, and Tyler Labine.

On September 25, 2017, NBC announced that it had given the production, then titled Bellevue, a put pilot commitment. The pilot was written by David Schulner, who was also set to executive produce alongside Peter Horton. Eric Manheimer, the former medical director at New York City’s Bellevue Hospital, was expected to serve as a producer. Universal Television was the production company involved with the pilot.

On January 12, 2018, it was reported that NBC had given the production an official pilot order and that Horton was expected to direct the pilot episode. On May 4, 2018, it was announced that NBC had given the production a series order. In February 2019, it was announced that New Amsterdam had been renewed for a second season, which premiered on September 24, 2019. In January 2020, NBC renewed the series for three additional seasons.

New Amsterdam follows Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) as he becomes the medical director of one of the United States’ oldest public hospitals, aiming to reform the neglected facility by tearing up its bureaucracy in order to provide exceptional care to patients.

Ryan Eggold (age 35) is an American actor known for playing Ryan Matthews on the CW teen drama series 90210 and Tom Keen on the NBC crime drama series The Blacklist and its short-lived spin-off series The Blacklist: Redemption. His film credits include Scent of a Woman (2013), Fathers and Daughters (2014), The Single Moms Club (2014), BlacKkKlansman (2018), and Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020), among others.

Playing the role of Dr. Lauren Bloom, Head of the Emergency Department in the series New Amsterdam, is Janet Montgomery (age 34), an English film and TV actress . Montgomery is known for her role as Ames in the second season of Fox’s Human Target, and also for her appearances in The Hills Run Red and Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, as well as her role as Eric Murphy’s assistant Jennie in HBO’s Entourage. She starred in the short-lived Made in Jersey and from 2014 to 2017, she portrayed the lead character, Mary Sibley, in the series Salem. She is also known for her role as Sarah Elliot, the mother of Gardner Elliot, in the 2017 film The Space Between Us.
