Shakira and J. Lo co-headlined the Super Bowl LIV halftime show held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on February 2, 2020. The show is part of Super Bowl LIV and was televised nationally by Fox. J. Lo and Shakira were joined by J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Lopez’s daughter Emme Muñiz. Many consider their performance as one of the best halftime shows ever. It celebrated Latina heritage and cultural diversity and was described as euphoric, high-octane and electric.
Jon Pareles of the The New York Times said the halftime show of Shakira and J. Lo was “a no-nonsense affirmation of Latin pride and cultural diversity in a political climate where immigrants and American Latinos have been widely demonized.”
In August 2019, it was announced that Jay-Z’s company Roc Nation had entered a deal with the NFL which would see Jay-Z and the company produce the halftime show. Among the producers Roc Nation enlisted include Dan Parise.
The selection of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira to headline the show was made known on September 26, 2019. The selection of Lopez and Shakira was reportedly intended to reflect the Hispanic culture of the host city of Miami. It’s the third time that Latin music artists headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, after Gloria Estefan headlined both the Super Bowl XXVI halftime show in 1992 and the Super Bowl XXXIII halftime show in 1999.
Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo served as the creative directors for Lopez’s section of the halftime show, which included approximately 130 dancers. Parris Goebel was the choreographer for Lopez’s set.
