The series is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France. The show portrays Viking Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) as a young farmer and family man who rises to fame by successful raids into England, and eventually becomes a Scandinavian King, with the support of his family and fellow warriors.

At the beginning of the series, Ragnar is frustrated by the policies of Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), his local chieftain who sends his Viking raiders east to the Baltic states and Russia, whose residents are as poor as the Norsemen. Ragnar wants to head west to discover new civilizations. With his friend Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), Ragnar builds a faster, sleeker fleet of boats to help him make it to the Western world. Through the years Ragnar, who claims to be a direct descendant of the god Odin, continues to struggle with Earl until they face each other in a final battle for supremacy.

In the later seasons, the series follows the fortunes of Ragnar’s sons and their adventures in England, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean.

Norse legendary sagas were partially fictional tales based in the Norse oral tradition, written down about 200 to 400 years after the events they describe. Further inspiration is taken from historical sources of the period, such as records of the Viking raid on Lindisfarne depicted in the second episode, or Ahmad ibn Fadlan’s 10th-century account of the Varangians. The series begins at the start of the Viking Age, marked by the Lindisfarne raid in 793.

Australian actor and former model Travis Fimmel played the role of Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings Seasons 1 to 4. Fimmel was a successful model before he became an actor. He studied under Hollywood acting coach Ivana Chubbuck then landed the title lead in Warner Bros. 2003 TV series Tarzan. He also appeared in Rocky Point in 2005, Southern Comfort in 2006, and The Big Valley in 2011. Fimmel has played a diverse spectrum of characters on the small and big screens since then.

Katheryn Winnick (age 42) is Lagertha, a shieldmaiden and Ragnar’s ex-wife and who was once queen of Kattegat. Winnick is a Canadian actress known also for her roles in Amusement (2008), Bones (2010), A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012), The Art of the Steal (2013), Polar (2019) and Wu Assassins (2019).

Canadian actor, singer and model Alexander Ludwig (age 27) plays the role of King Bjorn Ironside, Ragnar and Lagertha’s son and is the current king of Kattegat. Ludwig’s notable film credits include The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising and The Hunger Games.

Included in the Vikings cast is Alex Høgh Andersen (age 25), a Danish actor and photographer who plays the role of Ivar the Boneless, fourth son of Ragnar and Aslaug and the former king of Kattegat.

Russian actor Danila Kozlovsky also joins the series for the sixth season, as Oleg of Novgorod, the 10th century Varangian (east European Vikings) ruler of the Rus people.
