Genavieve Linkowski (age 21) from Goodrich, Michigan sang a cover of “In My Blood” by Canadian singer Shawn Mendes during the Hollywood Week – Solos round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
This is a big round for Genavieve. She told American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, “I got cut this round last time. I went to Hollywood Week two years ago and I got cut in the solo rounds…I am so determined to not let that happen this time.”
Genavieve picked “In My Blood” because it’s about not giving up. She said she wanted to give up when she was cut from Idol the last time. “But deep down I knew that this is what I’m called to do. I’m a fighter and I don’t give up,” she said.
Onstage, Genavieve wowed the American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Katy looked especially pleased and gave her a standing ovation. She told Luke and Lionel, “I love seeing her grow in real time.”

After her performance, Genavieve seemed very happy with the way things turned out. She didn’t expect Katy’s reaction. “I think I just gave a performance that will not send me home and I’m really excited,” she said.
“In My Blood” is the lead single released in March 2018 from Mendes’ self-titled third studio album. It was nominated for Song of the Year at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, and won Single of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2019. “In My Blood” also won Choice pop song at the Teen Choice Awards.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
