Nick Merico (age 23) from California and Jimmy Levy (age 21) from Florida sang a cover of “Someone You Loved” by Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi, during the Hollywood Week – Duets round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were impressed by Merico and Levy’s duet.
Lionel Richie said, “Sometimes you get voices that are so close together, you have to choose between one or the other. In this case, we could hear both of you separately and the match together was a wonderful match and blend. You’re going to the next level.”
“Someone You Loved” is the third single from Lewis Capaldi‘s second extended play, Breach (2018), and was later included on his debut album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent (2019). It was a sleeper hit in the US, topping the Billboard Hot 100 in its 24th week on the chart. It was nominated for Song of the Year at the 62nd Grammy Awards and also received an award for Song of the Year at the 2020 BRIT.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
