New Amsterdam is an American medical drama TV series created by David Schulner, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer. The series premiered on September 25, 2018 on NBC.
The series follows Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) as he becomes the medical director of one of the United States’ oldest public hospitals, aiming to reform the neglected facility by tearing up its bureaucracy in order to provide exceptional care to patients.
On January 12, 2018, it was reported that NBC had given the production an official pilot order and that Peter Horton was expected to direct the pilot episode. On May 4, 2018, it was reported that NBC had given the production a series order. In February 2019, it was announced that New Amsterdam had been renewed for a second season, which premiered on September 24, 2019. In January 2020, NBC renewed the series for three additional seasons.
New Amsterdam Season 1 holds a 31% approval rating with an average rating of 5.74 out of 10 based on 29 reviews on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. But the audience score is at a high 83% for Season 1 and 78% for Season 2. On Metacritic the series got a score of 47 out of 100 based on 14 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.
