Anaya Cheyenne (age 16) from Norwalk, Connecticut sang a cover of “I’ll Never Love Again” by Lady Gaga during the Blind Auditions round of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“I’ll Never Love Again” is a song from the 2018 film A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and director Bradley Cooper. It debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, a year after the album’s lead single “Shallow” won in the same category.
Anaya’s rendition of Lady Gaga’s song was impressive enough for The Voice judges/coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton to turn their chairs.
John Legend said Anaya’s runs were stunning, while Nick Jonas marveled at her sensitive voice and said it was extraordinary and then pitched for Kelly as her coach. Kelly said Anaya’s range is special and she can teach Anaya techniques to prep her for a record or tour. Blake said Anaya’s range and the stops in between are literally unbelievable.
After listening to the comments of the coaches, Anaya decided to join Team Kelly for her journey on The Voice 2020 (Season 18).

John Legend said Anaya’s performance took them on a journey. At the beginning, Anaya sounded young and a little shaky and nervous. “But by the end, oh my God, some of those runs you were doing were just stunning. John said that when she went on to the higher notes, “it was really exciting.”
Nick Jonas commented that Anaya is so young and having such a sensitive voice is extraordinary. “I dont’t know how much love you’ve experienced so far in your life, but to sing a song like that and to really give us all the feels was very impressive.” Then suddenly, Nick pitched Kelly Clarkson as the “absolute right choice for you” for “nailing those runs so that they’re flawless, like hers are flawless when she sings.” (Kelly said they are not flawless but she tries). Nick sums it up by saying, “And that’s why Kelly has my vote to coach you.”
Blake Shelton reacted to Nick’s advice to Anaya, saying it’e mean.
Kelly Clarkson said she didn’t have Anaya’s range when she was 16, she had to work very hard for that. She said when Anaya kept going higher with her notes, ‘That was special. You were like, “Turn your chair!” Kelly continued, “All the things that you can accomplish with your range are incredible. But it takes an amazing amount of breath to sustain all of that. And I feel like technique is my jam, and I can do that with you.” She said she not only wants Anaya not only to maybe get her to win the show but to prepare her for making a record, a tour. “I feel like you are my wheelhouse. So I would love to have you on my team.
Blake Shelton said that Anaya’s note at the end got him to hit the button. He said it wasn’t only the range but all the stops that Anaya made along the way. “That was literally unbelievable to me.” He said Anaya is in his wheelhouse, too, musically.
Kelly had the laugh of her life when Blake said it’s one of his favorite songs but thought it was Whitney’s at first.
Blake continued and said “Sometimes the greatest combinations of artist and coach are those the ones that people don’t expect.”
After all the pitches of Kelly and Blake, Anaya picked Kelly to be her coach for The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
The eighteenth season of the American reality television show The Voice premiered on February 24, 2020, on NBC. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his eighteenth season as host. For the first time since Season 4, the blind audition team limits were reduced from 12 to 10 each.
