Dillon James (age 26) from Bakersfield, California performed the Ray LaMontagne hit “Let It Be Me” straight from his backyard during the “Top 20 Sing for America” round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
American Idol judges cheered Dillon’s amazing performance. Lionel Richie said that Dillon’s look, sound, attitude, and presentation is that of a world-class artist. He said Dillon’s performance is like someone who had released several records. Luke Bryan said Dillon have to write the songs and make the music he wants to make and “the rest will be in your hands.” Katy Perry agreed and said that Dillon James could be like Gabby Barrett, who didn’t win American Idol but recently had a Gold record. “If you get to be Top 10, that could be your future next year. It’s all what you make of it. Your dreams are in your hands at this point.”

“Let It Be Me” is a song from Ray LaMontagne’s third studio album, Gossip in the Grain, released in 2008. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
