Joanna Serenko (age 18) from Missouri performs Bonnie Raitt’s “Angel from Montgomery” against Zan Fiskum (age 22) from Washington singing Brandi Carlile’s song “The Story” during The Knockouts round on The Voice 2020 (Season 18).

Nick Jonas said Joanna flutters around the executinon of notes easily while Zan has so much emotion when she’s singing. Kelly Clarkson said Joanna’s voice is really pure while Zan has so much freedom when she sings. Both Nick and Kelly did not pick a winner for this particular knockout, with Kelly saying it is very equal. Blake Shelton said he learned more about Joanna vocally, while Zan is a great combination of being a singer and an artist. Blake picked Zan as the winner of the knockout.

Coach John Legend said he loves the fluttery notes in Joanna’s headvoice. As to Zan, John found her voice piercing and beautiful when she goes big. John eventually picked Zan Fiskum as the winner of the round. Blake Shelton and Nick (Joanna’s original coach) pressed their button for the steal, but 4-chair-turner Joanna chose to join Team Blake Shelton this time.

“Angel from Montgomery” is a song written by John Prine and originally appeared in his self-titled album released in 1971. But it was Bonnie Raitt’s version on her 1974 album Streetlights that made the song popular.

“The Story” is a song released as a single from American folk rock singer Brandi Carlile’s 2007 album The Story. It reached No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as No. 35 on the Adult Pop Songs chart.

Judges’/Coaches’ Comments:

Nick Jonas, the former Coach of Joanna, said that he loves Joanna’s voice and had to make one of the toughest calls in the battle rounds last time. “And I am deeply regretting that after hearing that performance. You sort of flutter around the execution of the notes with such ease”. To Zan, Nick said she has so much emotion tied to what she’s singing. It’s really special.”

Kelly Clarkson said that the notes Joanna fluttered around were so cool. “You just picked really cool spots. Your voice is really pure. And Zan, you know you have this freedom with you when you sing.” Kelly did not pick any winner. She said it is a very equal, very even round and well done.

Blake Shelton said, “Joanna, I learned more about you, I think, vocally today. You pretty much had nothing to hide behind. And Zan, I feel like there’ singers and there’s artists, and you’re a great combination of both things.” Blake chose Zan as the winner of the Knockout round.

Coach John Legend agreed it was cool to hear Joanna’s subtleties and said he loves those fluttery notes in her headvoice. And to Zan, Johh Legend said, “When you go big, it’s really piercing and beautiful.” John said it’s difficult for him but he picked Zan as the winner of the Knockout because she is such a powerful vocalist and has been consistently great throughout the competition.

After thanking John Legend for being a great coach, Joanna was about to leave when Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton pressed their button for the steal.

Nick made a funny pitch when he said he had an argument before about how getting back with an ex and how bad that is. Nick said he had a sudden change of heart about the issue. He told Joanna, “It would be great for us to get back together.”

Blake said he had believed Joanna, “since the second you stepped onto the stage here at The Voice… I don’t play games with you like Nick does. I don’t beg you and convince you to be on my team just to turn around and dump you.”

Joanna told Nick, “You know we had a great run. But I think I just need to move on, you know? I’m gonna go with Blake.” For the third time, Joanna has a new coach. First it was Nick, then John, now it’s Blake’s turn to coach her on The Voice.

Blake said he stole Joanna because she has a star quality about her and she has an incredible voice. Blake said one of the quotables for this season, “I love that as a 43-year-old man, I can say that a girl left Nick Jonas for me.”

Season 18 of The Voice premiered at 8PM on February 24, 2020 on NBC and will air Mondays at 8 PM. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his eighteenth season as host.

On the question of whether or not The Voice Season 18 will continue airing amid the coronavirus pandemic, John Legend said that the program have pre-taped shows until the end of April. Whether the three weeks of planned live shows will push through in May is still unknown at this point. John said in his interview with Billboard that everybody’s playing things by ear because no one knows “where the world’s going to be in May.”
