Kelly Clarkson was surprised with the many falsettos of Roderick and at the same time praised Tate for being incredibly gifted. She picked Roderick as the winner of the Knockout. Blake Shelton said it’s a tough call in picking a winner between Roderick and Tate. He said Roderick and Coach Nick might have more musical connection but said Tate giving it his all during his performance could set the place on fire if it’s a live show. John Legend was impressed with the range and the falsetto of Roderick and at the same time praised Tate for putting his personality on a classic song. John picked Roderick as the winner of the Knockout.
Coach Nick Jonas said he loved both Roderick and Tate. Nick said Tate worked the crowd while Roderick sang a challenging song and made it his own. Going with his gut, Nick picked Roderick Chambers as the winner of the round.

“Redbone” is the second single from Childish Gambino’s third studio album “Awaken, My Love!” released in November 2016. It peaked at number 12 on Billboard Hot 100 and at number one on the Adult R&B chart. The song received three Grammy Award nominations including Record of the Year at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, eventually winning the award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
“The Scientist” is a song from Coldplay’s second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. It was released in the United States in 2002 as the third single from the album and reached number 18 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 34 on the Adult Top 40 chart.
Coaches/Judges Comments:
Kelly Clarkson was amazed that Roderick had different types of falsetto. As to Tate, here’ what Kelly commented, “I cannot believe that you are 16 years old. You are so incredibly gifted. Even if you were 24, it’d still be really impressive.” Kelly picked Roderick as the winner of the knockout saying, “Roderick might be the better choice, as in, like knowing there won’t be any kind of wavering in the performance at all.”
Blake Shelton said there’s more of a musical connection between Roderick and Nick, and their style of singing. Blake then said, “But Tate, if a kid like this gets into the live part of this show and does something like he just did, which is poured 100%, those are the type of performances that set this place on fire.” Blake didn’t pick a winner, saying it’s a tough spot and said good luck to their Coach Nick Jonas.
John Legend said Roderick moved from his falsetto to his full voice and his range is so stunning. Meanwhile, John said it was very impressive the way that Tate put his personality in a great way on such a classic song. John picked Roderick as the winner of the Knockout.
Coach Nick Jonas said it’s a tough decision for him. Watching the crowd, Nick said Tate used the platform to show that he means business and that there was an urgency. As for Roderick, he commented, “There’s this humility that you walk in, in addition to the fact that you came out and did a song that’s incredibly challenging to sing, and you made it your own.” He concluded with, “I love you both.” Nick said his decision is based on his gut call and picked Roderick Chambers as the winner of the Knockout.
Season 18 of The Voice premiered at 8PM on February 24, 2020 on NBC and will air Mondays at 8 PM. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his eighteenth season as host.
On the question of whether or not The Voice Season 18 will continue airing amid the coronavirus pandemic, John Legend said that the program have pre-taped shows until the end of April. Whether the three weeks of planned live shows will push through in May is still unknown at this point. John said in his interview with Billboard that everybody’s playing things by ear because no one knows “where the world’s going to be in May.”
