Sonali Majumdar (age 15) and Sumanth (age 20) aka the dance duo BAD Salsa from Kolkata, India, performed a breathtaking dance routine on the Auditions round of America’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 15).
“BAD”, according to Sumanth, stands for Biwash Academy of Dance. America’s Got Talent presents a backstory saying that Sonali’s father is a farmer who used to earn $1 a day, not enough to feed his family.
Sumanth and Sonali struggled a lot but both were passionate about dance. The pair won India’s Got Talent 2012 and ended up as 2nd runner-up in the dance competition Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (Season 6).
BAD Salsa’s audition on AGT earned a standing ovation from the audience and from AGT judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara. The dance duo got 4 yes votes from the judges and advanced to the next round of the competition.

Howie Mandel commented that Sumanth and Sonali are the opposite of their acronym BAD. “You are surprising, you are energetic. That looked dangerous. It was fast, it was entertaining, I love it.”
Sofia Vergara said it was exciting. “I wanted to dance but then I got scared because I couldn’t take my eyes off you. You look beautiful together.”
Heidi Klum commented, “I love you guys too. I have seen so much dance on the stage but there are so many moves that you guys did that I truly have not seen before.”
Simon Cowell felt like watching a movie that’s pressed fast forwards because “it was so fast in a fantastic way.” Simon thanked Sumanth and Sonali for flying over and choosing to be on the show. “Without people like you, we have no show. So this was amazing.”
America’s Got Talent (AGT) Season 15 will broadcast in the United States beginning on May 26, 2020, on NBC. For this season, AGT judges are Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, returning Heidi Klum, and newcomer Sofia Vergara.
This season is most notable for its production being affected by the COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic in 2020, which impacted audition sessions. The program initially moved to filming without an audience present at auditions, before ultimately suspending production. Auditions were later allowed to continue, but via online applications from those quarantined in their homes.
The production staff decided to push through with the broadcast as planned and premiere on May 26. Debate continues on how many episodes would be broadcast with the amount of material that had been recorded.
