Francisco Martin (age 19) from San Francisco, California sang “Falling Like The Stars” by James Arthur during the Top 10 Homeward Bound round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). Note that the Top 10 was modified to a Top Eleven as the judges used their save for an additional singer, Makayla Phillips.
American Idol judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry were moved by Francisco’s heartfelt rendition.
Katy Perry was crying and said it’s a mixture of hormones and believability. She said she felt the song and there was real believability in Francisco’s performance. Luke Bryan thinks Francisco is a diamond in the rough and that he knows how to get all the emotion out of a song. Before giving his comment, Lionel Richie made a shoutout for Francisco’s mother for being a first responder. Then Lionel said that halfway through the song, he saw Francisco fly out of his nervousness and give exactly what he’s all about, which is “true talent”.

“Falling Like the Stars” is the third single from James Arthur‘s third album You and was released as a digital download and for streaming in May 2019. The song peaked at number 25 on the UK Singles Chart.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
