Julia Gargano (age 21) from Staten Island, New York sang a Billy Joel classic during the Top 10 Homeward Bound round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). Note that the Top 10 was modified to a Top Eleven as the judges added another singer when they used their save for Makayla Phillips.
American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were blown away by Julia’s rendition and gave her a standing ovation. More than that, they knelt then lifted their hands in gestures of praise, showing just how much they admired her performance.
Luke Bryan said he’s speechless and said that might be his “favorite performance of the year, thus far.” He continued, “Twelve out of ten, what a moment of elegance and maturity and class and grace and beauty.”
Lionel Richie said Julia took Billy Joel’s song and made it her own. He said it was memorable and fantastic.
Katy Perry agreed with Luke that it may be one of the best performances of the season. She said Julia sang so well, with so many different inflections. “You showed off how absolutely talented you are as a singer.” She said Julia grew to a very, very high level and that she should just prepare.

“New York State of Mind” is a song written by Billy Joel which initially appeared on the album Turnstiles in 1976. It was never released as a single, but Joel plays it regularly in concerts.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
