Billions is an American TV drama series starring Emmy and Golden Globe winners Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis. The series is a complex drama about power politics in the world of New York high finance. It was created by Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin. Koppelman and Levien are its executive producers and showrunners.

The series was ordered by Showtime in March 2015 with a 12-episode pick up and premiered on January 17, 2016. On January 26, 2016, the series was renewed for a second season, which premiered on February 19, 2017.

Billions is loosely based on the activities of Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and his legal battles with hedge fund manager Steve Cohen of S.A.C. Capital Advisors.

Season 2 of Billions also incorporates loosely the cases involving Treasury bond auction market manipulation conduct of Salomon Brothers, including the roles of CEO John Gutfreund and bond trader Paul Mozer, in 1991.

A total of four seasons of Billions have aired so far. On May 8, 2019, the series was renewed for a fifth season which premiered on May 3, 2020

Billions is considered to be the first American TV series to have a non-binary regular character on mainstream North American television, with non-binary American actor Asia Kate Dillon as Taylor Amber Mason, an analyst at Axe Capital. Taylor becomes close to Axelrod and is appointed CIO of Axe Capital, and later they form Taylor Mason Capital in competition with Axe Capital.

Billions is highly acclaimed, receiving positive reviews since its first Season. On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a rating of 86%, with a rating of 77% for season 1, 89% for season 2 and 93% for season 3. On Metacritic, the first season has a score of 69 out of 100, while Season 2 has a score of 67 out of 100 indicating “generally favorable reviews”. Its third season scored 77 out of 100, while its fourth currently holds a score of 87 out 100 indicating “universal acclaim”.

The series has been nominated for multiple Satellite Awards as well as a Critics’ Choice Award.

In terms of viewership, Billions reportedly averages 4.5 million viewers across multiple platforms per week.
