Outlander is a drama TV series based upon author Diana Gabaldon‘s historical time travel book series of the same name. The show premiered on August 9, 2014. It stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married former World War II nurse who in 1946 finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743. There she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings.
Season Five of Outlander, which will play out over 12 episodes, will find the Frasers fighting for their family and the home they have forged on Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie must find a way to defend all that he has created in America, and to protect those who look to him for leadership and protection – while hiding his personal relationship with Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Duncan Lacroix), the man whom Governor William Tryon has ordered him to hunt down and kill.
With her family together at last, Claire Fraser must use her modern medical knowledge and foresight to prevent them from being ripped apart once again. However, while focusing on protecting others, she risks losing sight of what it means to protect herself.
Irish actress and former model Caitríona Balfe (age 40) portrays the role of Claire Fraser in the series. She had won two People’s Choice Awards, two Saturn Awards, an Irish Film and Television Award, and also received four Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her role in Outlander.
Scottish actor Sam Heughan (age 39) portrays the dashing warrior Jamie Fraser. Like Balfe, Heughan received acclaim for his role in Outlander and has received a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor, a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television out of five nominations, and a nomination for the Critics Choice Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Prior to Outlander, Heughan was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer in 2003, for his performance in the play Outlying Islands at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs.
Outlander had received mostly positive reviews since its premiere. On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, Outlander Season 1 has a 91% “certified fresh” rating out of 62 reviews. On Metacritic, the first season has a rating of 73 out of 100, based on 34 reviews. Season 5 holds an approval rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes while the audience score is currently at 92% based on ratings from 89 users.
