Joanna Serenko (age 18) from St. Louis, Missouri performed “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers during the Top 9 Performances on the semi-finals of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
Nick Jonas, former coach of Joanna Serenko, said Joanna was incredible. He said Blake has been telling him that letting go of Joanna is his biggest regret, and in some ways it really is. But he said he’s so grateful that Joanna is still in the competition. He said he’s still a fan of Joanna and that he believes in Joanna as an artist.
John Legend, who also coached Joanna at one time said he loves the heart, honesty, and soul in her voice. He said every performance of Joanna is really authentic and really comes from a real place in her heart.
Coach Blake Shelton said Joanna’s voice floats like a butterfly. He said Joanna is so powerful and he loves her artistry.
Joanna won the Wild Card in the previous round and advanced to the semi-finals, when she got the highest number of public votes among 4 wild card contenders.

Joanna Serenko Performs the Bill Withers Song “Lean on Me” – The Voice Top 9 Performances 2020
“Lean on Me” was released in April 1972 as the first single from Bill Withers’ second album, Still Bill. It was his only number one single on both the soul singles and the Billboard Hot 100. The song is ranked number 208 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
Season 18 of The Voice premiered at 8PM on February 24, 2020 on NBC and will air Mondays at 8 PM. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his eighteenth season as host.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, production has done some adjustments. For the first time ever, there will be only three weeks of Live Shows: the Playoffs, the Semi-Final, and the Finale. That’s a big drop compared to six weeks of Live Shows in Season 17.
The three weeks of live shows will also air as lives done at each contestant’s and coach’s home.
As to the voting system, the television audience will vote to save their favorite artists and artists who receive the fewest votes will be eligible for the “Instant Save”. America will then save their favorite performer by voting on “The Voice” app (available on iOS and Android) or NBC.com. The artists with the fewest number of votes will be “sent home” or eliminated each week.
