Ellie Carney (age 18), a sales assistant from North London, performed her original song during the Auditions round on Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14).
At the opening chat, Ellie said she joined BGT because it’s an incredible platform to do what she wants to do. She said her song is about her relationship with her mum. “I’ve got a very good relationship with my mum. She’s there for me through all the hard times. I just wanted to put all of my feelings into a song and show her appreciation,” she said.
Ellie’s touching song and emotional rendition wowed the audience and the BGT judges. She earned a standing ovation from the audience and the BGT judges. Ellie Carney ultimately got 4 yes votes from the judges and advanced to the next round of the competition.

David Walliams said, “What I love about your voice is that there is a power to it. And to actually make us think about everything you’re singing and feel it with you is an incredible talent and you have that talent.”
Alesha Dixon commented, “I like the light and the shade in your voice. And I think you go from your full voice into that soft pro key of your voice just beautifully. I think there’s so much potential and a lot of room for you to grow. And I love that you’re very conscientious at such a young age and trying to connect to those emotional songs, it’s lovely. Keep doing what you’re doing.”
Amanda Holden agreed and said, “I think there are head and heart people in life, I think you are a heart person. I think that though it was a very emotional audition and you did enormously well considering you’re so young, it was very confident. And I think there’s star quality in you.”
Simon Cowell said there are so many people like Ellie who need a break. “You came out here, it was very raw, you’ve got soul, you’ve got real room to grow. It reminds us why we made these shows in the first place. I’m so happy for you, you did great,” he said.
Britain’s Got Talent (aka BGT) is a televised British talent show competition, and part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. It is hosted by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (also known as Ant and Dec), and produced by both Thames (formerly Talkback Thames) and Syco Entertainment, distributed by Fremantle, and broadcast on ITV every year. The show premiered on June 9, 2007 following the success of America’s Got Talent the previous year.
Every year, contestants of any age can audition for the contest with whatever talent they wish to demonstrate. Auditionees seek to impress a panel of judges – at present, consisting of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and David Walliams – in order to secure a place in the live rounds of BGT. The winner gets a cash prize and a place within that year’s performances for the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British Royal Family.
Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14) will air in two parts, the first in April 2020 with pre-recorded audition episodes, while the second containing the live rounds to be aired at a later date. The series was split into two parts because of the Covid-19 pandemic or coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown issued by the British government.
