Country singer Shaquira McGrath performed a stunning cover of “Wake Me Up” by Avicii during the Judge Cuts on America’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 15).
Shaquira’s performance was shown on a new gigantic screen, one of the production adjustments made in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. AGT judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Sofia Vergara and Heidi Klum were all impressed with Shaquira’s rendition, with Simon saying that she lit up the gigantic screen and commanded it.

“Wake Me Up” is the lead single from Swedish DJ and record producer Avicii’s debut studio album True, released on June 17, 2013. The song peaked at number one in much of Europe and charted well in various countries. The song has been named as the highest charting dance track of the decade (2010-2019), sitting at No. 13 in the 100-strong list from the official UK Singles Chart.

Judges’ Comments:
Simon Cowell said he wished Shaquira could be sitting where he is because she lit up the gigantic screen and absolutely commanded it. “You have a very special talent,” he said. Simon noted later that Shaquira’s song choice might have been impacted by how the world changed amid the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic. Shaquira agreed and said it’s one of those songs that hit home for what’s happening right now.
Heidi Klum recalled when Shaquira sang country and said Shaquira lights up when she sings country. “It was so amazing. To me, you’re a country star.”
Sofia Vergara thinks Shaquira’s performance was spectacular. “It was great. Your voice is breathtaking,” she said.
Howie Mandel said the competitiveness is “above and beyond” and said Shaquira makes the judges’ job a lot tougher. “We’re gonna be fighting tonight, I think,” Howie concluded.
America’s Got Talent (AGT) Season 15 premiered in the United States on May 26, 2020, on NBC. For this season, AGT judges are Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, returning Heidi Klum, and newcomer Sofia Vergara.
This season is most notable for its production being affected by the COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic in 2020, which impacted audition sessions. The program initially moved to filming without an audience present at auditions, before ultimately suspending production. Auditions were later allowed to continue, but via online applications from those quarantined in their homes.
The production staff decided to push through with the broadcast as planned and premiere on May 26.
Production resumed the week of June 22, 2020, filming on a film backlot in Simi Valley, decorated to look like a drive-in movie theater. Everyone, including the judges and host Terry Crews, wore masks when not on camera. The Judge Cuts round was reduced from four episodes to one, and the acts were reduced from 72 to 60. The number of live shows is expected to feature 44 acts over four weeks, compared to 36 acts appearing over three weeks last season. Producers are still deciding where the live shows will be shot and if audience members will be present.
