The Queen’s Gambit miniseries follows the life of a chess prodigy named Beth Harmon from the age of 8 to 22. It centers on her quest to become a chess Grandmaster and her struggles with addiction.
This American drama web television miniseries was developed by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The series is directed by Scott Frank and executive produced by Frank, Allan Scott, and William Horberg.
On March 19, 2019, Netflix had given the production a series order consisting of six episodes. Filming for the series was done in Cambridge, Ontario and Berlin.
The series is set to be released on Netflix on October 23, 2020.
American-born Argentine-British actress Anya Taylor-Joy (age 24) portrays the lead role of Beth Harmon. Taylor-Joy first became known for starring as Thomasin in the period horror film The Witch (2015). She received further recognition for the films Split (2016), Glass (2019), Thoroughbreds (2017), and Emma (2020).
On television, Taylor-Joy had starred in the The Miniaturist (2017), Peaky Blinders (2019), and the Netflix fantasy drama series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019). Taylor-Joy was the 2017 winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Trophée Chopard. She was also nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
