Awkward air-conditioning telemarketer Martha Plant (Alexandra Kotcheff) lives a lonely existence. She does not like people and likes burying stolen treasures in exchange for cash donations. When she takes in Sadie Mayflower (Hannah Leder), a vagrant who has multiple personalities, an unlikely friendship is formed. But Martha discovers having three friends in one may be more than she can handle.
The Planters is a dark comedy film, which is the feature directorial debut of Alexandra Kotcheff and Hannah Leder, who co-wrote the screenplay and also starred in the film. Kotcheff and Leder reportedly shot for 127 days entirely without an on-set crew and did their own cinematography, costumes, production design, as well as hair and makeup, according to deadline.com.

The Planters is produced by Kotcheff, Leder and Jacqueline Beiro, with Beiro working from off the set. The film had its world premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in September 2019, where it won Film of the Festival, Raindance Award. Since then, it has received more than 10 awards from different festivals including Audience Award (Comedy Vanguard) and Jury Award (Comedy Vanguard) at the Austin Film Festival 2019; Best Director (Best in Show), Best Narrative Feature – Honorable Mention, Best Director (Best in Show) at the Fargo Film Festival 2019; Best Original Song, Best of Festival Award (New Directors Competition) and VER/PRG Best Cinematography Award at the Nashville Film Festival 2019 and Jury Prize (Best Feature Film) at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival 2020.
Kotcheff and Leder’s film will be available in virtual cinemas on October 9, 2020 and on VOD on December 8, 2020.
