The Broccoli was unmasked during the the Group C Finals on Week 9 of The Masked Singer (Season 4), after losing to Mushroom in the Smackdown. Startattle.com – The Masked Singer.
Before he was unmasked, the Broccoli Masked Singer performed “Old Time Rock and Roll“ by Bob Seger and “Take Me Down” by Alabama. He was pitted against Jellyfish and Mushroom and faced the latter in the Smackdown. Broccoli was eliminated in the end, while Mushroom and Jellyfish moved on to the semi-finals.
Some fans of The Masked Singer were able to guess who the Broccoli is, even before his unmasking.
So who is Broccoli on The Masked Singer?
Broccoli was revealed as Paul Anka, the legendary Canadian-American singer, songwriter, and actor. Among the judges / panelists, it was Robin Thicke who made the right guess as to Broccoli’s identity, prior to the reveal.
Nicole Scherzinger‘s first impression guess was American actor, comedian, and writer Bill Murray. She changed her guess to American singer and actor Wayne Newton because of the roulette clue and thought that Mr. Vegas is Broccoli.
Ken Jeong initially thought that Broccoli was Canadian-American actor, comedian, singer, and writer Martin Short. He changed his guess to English musician, singer, songwriter and actor Ringo Starr, the drummer for the Beatles. Ken based his final guess on the clue package showing a ringmaster and the Jason mask.
Robin Thicke‘s first impression guess was American stand-up comedian and actor, Bob Newhart. He then changed his guess to Paul Anka, saying there were too many Canada clues in Broccoli’s package.
Jenny McCarthy thought at first that Broccoli was English-born American TV presenter, politician, actor, producer, and former lawyer Jerry Springer. She changed her guess to American singer, composer, and record producer Neil Sedaka. She based her final guess on the Beatles clue.
Guest panelist Jay Pharoah thought at first that Broccoli was American weather forecaster, actor, and author Al Roker. But after listening to Broccoli’s voice, he thought it could be Paul Simon behind the Broccoli mask.

Being on The Masked Singer was a “great, great kick”, according to Paul Anka. He said, “These 65 years I’ve never been out of work. So I said, you know what, I got to get on the boards again and I’m gonna go and have some fun, because I’m gonna come home and enjoy it with the kids. And I got to tell you something, I’m very humbled because we have gone through something in our country. To have this kind of fun and enjoy this like this, you should all be very, very proud.”
On being fit at age 79, Paul said that working with Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin from back then, he got it all on his system. “Somewhere in the midst of that I said, you know you better take care of yourself, man. And you know I’ve got five girls, a 14-year-old son and I got nine grandchildren. So I got to stay fit, man,” he said.
Several clues about the Broccoli Masked Singer were explained during the reveal. The Jason Mask is a nod to Paul’s famous son-in-law, Jason Bateman. The three Mariachi singers is a clue to Paul’s album “Amigos.” The soup can hints to the Campbell’s soup contest Paul won as a teen that sparked his career.
Paul Anka (age 79) became famous with hit songs like “Diana”, “Lonely Boy”, “Put Your Head on My Shoulder”, and “(You’re) Having My Baby”. He wrote one of Tom Jones’s biggest hits, “She’s a Lady” and the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He also wrote the English lyrics to Claude François and Jacques Revaux’s music for Frank Sinatra’s signature song, “My Way.”
He collaborated with Michael Jackson, co-writing the songs “I Never Heard” and “Love Never Felt so Good” in their 1983 session. The former was later retitled and released in 2009, under the title “This Is It”.
Paul Anka won the Juno Award for Composer of the Year in 1975 and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1980. In 2004, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2005.
The fourth season of the American television series The Masked Singer premiered on Fox on September 23, 2020. Nick Cannon, singer-songwriter Robin Thicke, television and radio personality Jenny McCarthy, actor and comedian Ken Jeong, and recording artist Nicole Scherzinger all returned for their fourth season as host and panelists.
The panelists also engaged in a competition for the Golden Ear in this season. After each masked singer performed for the first time along with an initial clue package, each panelist wrote their first impressions-based guess at the identity of the celebrity. Those guesses were revealed after each celebrity was unmasked, with the panelists scoring a point for each celebrity they got correct from their initial first impression. The panelist with the most correct answers will win the Golden Ear.
