Well it’s not that often that, you know, I get a battle pairing where I feel like every single note that was given in the rehearsals came into play here, and that just goes to show your professionalism and how eager you are to get this done up here today. And you literally both did it, and really the only notes that we’re hearing are a little more taste-driven than technically speaking, you know? So I just want to say thanks and respect and all that for you two putting in the time and the work.
On choosing Ian Flanigan: I ended up choosing Ian because he’s just got the most unique voice that maybe I’ve ever heard on “The Voice.” He’s a dark horse. I was the only person that pushed my button for him. Moving forward with Ian, I got to find songs that really help him display that low baritone sound that he has. Really milk that for all it’s worth.
Gwen Stefani’s comment
It was really hard because it felt really balanced, yet you guys are so different.
With Aaron, some of the choices that you made changing up the melody were kind of shocking in a good way. It was creative, and your voice is so clear and powerful.
With Ian, nobody has a voice that sounds like that. Tt’s just so rare, and I always tend to be attracted to rarer, stylized voices. The way you are on stage feels really natural.
John Legend’s comment
Fantastic job. Aaron, I think the most impressive part of your performance was just hearing your range and the power of your voice, but it wasn’t clear who you were. Whereas Ian, I felt like it was so much identity and character in your voice. The rasp, the gravel, that was more compelling for me, and I would lean toward Ian if I were Blake.
Kelly Clarkson’s comment
Aaron, I like you on this song, but I felt like it kind of tamed you a bit from what I saw and heard from you in the blinds. But, Aaron, you did an amazing job.
Ian, you happen to be one of my favorite vocalists this season. I think that you have an incredible tone. I was like, glued to you. Like, it was inappropriate. I was literally just like “I got to stop looking.”… I would listen to you sing “You Are My Sunshine.” I’m just saying if you have such a storyteller vibe, and I’m attracted to that. And I would go with you.
