The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is an American science fiction action thriller film directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, Red Sparrow, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire + Mockingjay 1 & 2), from a screenplay by Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt. It is based on the 2020 novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins, serves as a prequel to The Hunger Games (2012), and is the fifth installment in The Hunger Games film series. The Hunger Games 5 is set to be released by Lionsgate Films on November 17, 2023 in US theaters nationwide.
The sci-fi action thriller film is produced by Nina Jacobson, Francis Lawrence, and Brad Simpson. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes stars Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, Jason Schwartzman, and Viola Davis. It is the first film in the series not to feature Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is set 64 years before the first film. Its plot follows young Coriolanus Snow, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem. The 18-year-old Coriolanus is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy Gray’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.
