Marybeth Byrd, an 18-year-old singer from Armorel, Arkansas sang an amazing version of “Angel from Montgomery” during the Blind Auditions on The Voice 2019 (Season 17).

“Angel from Montgomery” is a song written and originally recorded by John Prine for his self-titled 1971 album John Prine. It had been covered by various artists like Carly Simon and John Denver. But it was Bonnie Raitt’s cover that attained wide recognition in 1974.

Byrd, who later said that Bonnie Raitt is one of her favorite artists, got a 4-chair-turn from judges John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, and Blake Shelton.

Clarkson blocked Blake, getting her revenge when she was blocked by the latter during Katie Kadan’s audition.

Though Blake knew he was blocked and there’s no way he can get Marybeth Byrd on his team, he still turned his chair for her and he advised Marybeth to pick Gwen as her coach.

Judges comments:

John Legend said he was in love with Marybeth’s voice from the first note she sang. He said she had a strong, clear tone when she sings, has a big chest voice and that “she hits these lovely falsettos and the transition was so seamless.” He continued, “You’re in complete control of how you sing… I have a good feeling you’re gonna be of the top contestants this season.”

Legend later said that Marybeth’s voice is versatile and could go from pop, to country to soul.

Gwen told Marybeth:

To be able to get your heart and attach that to your voice and have body language and be a vessel for this emotion… You have this crazy, cute, adorable rasp and softness and you coult tell that physically, it feels good for you to sing, ’cause you know that God gave you that gift and you need to do it. And I love to listen to music that is emotional. That’s all I care about is just the story.

Kelly said she loved it that Marybeth chose to sing a song by Bonnie Raitt. She said she used her only block for the whole season, just in case Marybeth wanted to go with Blake.

Kelly Clarkson’s comments were interrupted several times by a voice clip of Gwen Stefani singing “Don’t speak”, which happens everytime Blake Shelton secretly presses the red button.
