Four-chair turners Mendeleyev (age 28) and Preston C. Howell (age 15) of Team Legend performed a cover of James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” on The Voice Battles 2019 (Season 17).
Gwen Stefani said the artists did an amazing job with harmonies, where they were flipping from different parts, which she said is hard to do. She said Mendeleyev had interesting choices in the rhythm of the melodies, doing it a little differently from the original by James Taylor. Overall, Gwen noted that Preston’s tone at 15 is so pretty and she wants to see more of what Preston is going to do. So Gwen picked Preston as the winner of the battle.
Kelly Clarkson noted Mendeleyev’s amazing bass and remembered his audition and said he really impressed her then. As for Preston, she said she loves him and doesn’t care about his age. She said it’s different from the sound he’s going for, and he nailed it, which shows versatility. But she also said Mendeleyev is a “beast”.
Blake Shelton said he pressed his button for both of them. He said he fought hard for Preston in the blinds because he feels there’s something about him and his voice, so he picked Preston as the winner of the battle.
Coach John Legend said the voices of Mendeleyev and Preston are extremely different. He said the song is more to Mendeleyev’s wheelhouse, and his rich and beautiful tone brought everybody in. Preston is young and versatile, and have great range, poise, and control. In the end, John picked Preston as the winner of the battle. He commented later that Preston was a joy to work with and he thinks there were more places he could go with Preston.
Mendeleyev was eliminated from the competition, since Blake Shelton, the only coach whose team was not full, did not go for him.
