Bette (Jennifer Beals) is conflicted about old feelings, Shane (Katherine Moennig) is tested by her relationship with Quiara (Lex Scott Davis), and Alice (Leisha Hailey) gets blindsided at home and work. With Dani (Arienne Mandi) busy with the election, Sophie (Rosanny Zayas) feels relieved to have Finley (Jacqueline Toboni) around. Micah (Leo Sheng) introduces José (Freddy Miyares) to his mother.

The L Word: Generation Q is set ten years after the events of The L Word. It follows an ensemble cast of friends, the majority of whom are lesbians. The series relocates from its original setting of West Hollywood, California to Silver Lake, Los Angeles.

The series starts ten years after the death of Jenny Schecter. Bette Porter is running for Mayor of Los Angeles to succeed Eric Garcetti, but her electoral position is threatened during a live press conference. Alice, now with her own successful talk show, is in a relationship with therapist Nat and struggles to mother Nat’s kids and get along with Nat’s ex-wife, Gigi, who is also the kids’ biological mother.

The original L word characters reunite when Shane moves back to Los Angeles after selling her hair salons in Paris and New York. The new generation members are Dani, Sophie, Micah, and Finley. Dani Núñez, a PR executive for her father’s company, is girlfriend of one of Alice’s show writers, Sophie Suarez, who works with Finley, Alice’s personal PA. Their flatmate, Micah Lee, is an adjunct college professor who is crushing on their new neighbor.

A sequel to The L Word was confirmed to be in development by Showtime on July 11, 2017. Marja-Lewis Ryan was confirmed as showrunner and executive producer on November 20, 2017; original L Word series creator and showrunner Ilene Chaiken serve as executive producer, with Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey also serving as executive producers. The L Word:Generation Q consist of eight episodes. It premiered on December 8, 2019.

American actress and former teen model Jennifer Beals (age 56) reprises her role as Bette Porter in The L Word: Generation Q. Beals made her film debut in My Bodyguard (1980), before receiving critical acclaim for her role in Flashdance (1983), for which she won NAACP Image Award for Actress and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. Since then, Beals starred in several notable films including Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), The Last Days of Disco (1998), Roger Dodger (2002), The Book of Eli (2010), and Before I Fall (2017). In 1998, Beals married Canadian entrepreneur Ken Dixon, and gave birth to their daughter in October 2005.

Katherine Sian Moennig (age 42), also reprises her role as Shane McCutcheon on The L Word (2004–09). Moennig is an American actress who is best known for her role as as Jake Pratt on Young Americans (2000) and for her McCutcheon character on The L Word. She has played the role of Lena in the Showtime series Ray Donovan since 2013. She also played a recurring role on Grownish on Freeform as Professor Paige Hewson in season 2 and 3.
