A Rough Draft follows a resident of Moscow named Kirill, a talented designer of computer games. One day, he is completely erased from the memory of everyone he knew and loved. Kirill then learns that he is chosen for an important mission. His purpose is to become a customs officer between parallel worlds, of which there are dozens in the universe.
Kirill learns to open the portals to various parallel worlds which represent alternative versions of Moscow: a steampunk Imperial Russia, a post-apocalyptic tropic resort world, a dystopian Gulag world, and a highly advanced utopian world. Over time, Kirill learns that the Earth is a rough draft, a setting for social experiments secretly staged by the government of the Utopian world. Learning this, Kirill rebels against his supervisors.
A Rough Draft is a 2018 Russian fantasy film directed by Sergey Mokritskiy, based on the novel of the same name by Sergei Lukyanenko. It stars Nikita Volkov, Yevgeny Tkachuk, Olga Borovskaya Yulia Peresild, Severija Janušauskaitė, and Yevgeny Tsyganov. It was released in Russia on May 25, 2018.

Although the film was one of the most anticipated Russian releases of 2018, it received mixed to negative reviews of professional critics, receiving 32% on KinoPoisk. The majority of criticism was focused on CGI, acting and an incomprehensible storyline. Critics also panned the film for its changes from the novel. Critic Alexey Lytovchenko (Rossiyskaya Gazeta) wrote that in some places it is impossible to differentiate the characters and understand their motives.
А Rough Draft underperformed in the box office earning RUB 209.7 million ($3.27 million) against a budget of RUB 200 million ($3.12 million).
Nikita Volkov plays the lead role of Kirill. Volkov is known for Two Women (2014), Dance to Death (2017) and Project ‘Gemini’ (2020).
Yevgeny Tkachuk (age 37) portrays Kotya Chagin. Tkachuk was born in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. but his family moved to Syzran, Samarskaya region, Russia. His father is an actor in the Drama theatre of Syzran and his mother is a physician, PhD in medical sciences. At a young age, he was in the theatre and spent a lot of time in the backstage, watching the performances. He moved to Moscow and attended the Russian University of Theatre Arts (GITIS), Department of Directing of the Dramatic Theatre, Workshop of O. Kudrjashov. He was invited to play the role of Hippolytus/Boy in the “Phaedra, Golden Spike” (Director A. Zholdak) in the Theatre of Nations (Moscow). For this performance he was awarded with Prize of the MK “For the Best Debut”. After graduation from the Academy in 2006, Tkachuk was awarded by the People’s Artist of USSR Mikhail Tsarev “For the successful comprehension of the Actor’s profession”.
Olga Borovskaya portrays Anna. Borovskayaan actress, known for A Rough Draft (2018), Chernovik (2019) and Chuzhie tayny Vremena goda (2013).
Russian stage and film actress Yulia Peresild (age 35) portrays Rosa . Peresild’s screen debut was the role of Natasha Kublakova in the TV series Land (2003), directed by Aleksandr Baranov. Her film credits include The Bride (2006) The Edge (2010), In the Fog (2012, and the mystical thriller Sonnentau (2012) which brought her popularity among Russian audiences. Peresild also appeared in the TV series Santa Lucia (2012).
