Camryn Leigh Smith (age 16) from Georgia performed a cover of “Big White Room” by English singer Jessie J during the Auditions round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
The American Idol judges were very much impressed with her vocals. At the same time, Luke Bryan couldn’t help but notice the similarity between Camryn and the “young” Katy Perry.
Camryn got a standing ovation from Katy Perry and a ticket to Hollywood, advancing to the next level of the competition.
While Camryn was singing, Luke Bryan told Katy, “That’s like you, right? That reminds me of you.”
Right after Camryn’s performance, Luke Bryan, talking to the other judges said “Am I right on that? I’ve seen like pictures of you (Katy Perry) when you were young.” The 35-year-old Katy reacted, “When I was young!” Then Katy let out her signature half-growl, half-scream.
Katy got serious and commented on Camryn’s performance. She said, “When you dug into that note towards the end, it gave me hope for this season of American Idol. You gave me hope again.”
Lionel said, “Every once in a while, something just shocks us into believing that there is something better than last season.”
Luke Bryan commented, “I just think the fact that it’s just so natural and easy for you at this age is just remarkable. So, I’m a big time Yes.”
Katy Perry gave Camryn a Yes, too. Lionel Richie stood up to say Camryn is going to Hollywood, handing her the ticket to the next round of American Idol.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
